Fiodor Sumkin is very special. This is what all drawings of alphabets and cars and animals should look like. — A.A.

Typography research. Inspired on amazing work of illustrator and typographer Sergey Vassilyevich Chekhonin.

… the making of ‘Portfolio’ iPad edition by Fiodor Sumkin.
http://www.vimeo.com/23856845I just wanted to make a short film that captured some of hand-crafted passion that goes into the making of an interactive magazine for Apple iPad.
I will post more information about the process on my blog:

Most of the work in 2010 has been done for editorial and commercial such as Nike Inc.,
Art+Auction Magazine, CEO Magazine and The Prime Russian Magazine.

ALL FOR ONE EVENT
AT NIKETOWN NEW YORK ON OCTOBER 22, 2010
Fiodor Sumkin for Troy Polamalu:
“Instinct makes Troy’s game great. He reacts to what he feels on the field. He puts the pieces together so that the game makes sense, and when this happens, everything falls naturally into place. The Troy poster is also based on instinct. It’s not about doing the math beforehand or endlessly contemplating the laws behind acting on something. It’s about including every element you know that feels right so that the end result is a victory.”

#3. “Who’s gonna eat my soup?”*
*This picture is inspired by Gnarls Barkley’s song “Who’s Gonna Save My Soul”.
I’ve been working on it about six months, from August 2009 til January 2010. The biggest challenge was to organize the process without getting lost in the details.
Initially I planned to finish this work in November 2009, but then I decided to use calligraphy with Blackletter type or Gothic scripts. I’ve spent most of the December on studying different Latin-based scripst used in Medieval Europe and trying them out. Luckily, it turned out to be an interesting and exciting task. Very soon I chose a technique that suited me best. ^^

Format: Poster;
Client: Self-Promotion;
Technique: Hand-drawn, Gel Ink Pen, colored in Photoshop;
2009-2010.

*”Who’s gonna eat my soup?” is the work name of my new personal project. It is nothing special – just a typographical research. Research, copying, and reading books is a good way to learn calligraphy. Voilà. ^_^
