Born in Brisbane, Australia and currently based there, Smith travelled to Melbourne Australia to carry out a degree in Graphic Design. It was during her studies, that the fascination with typography really began. This penchant for letters and words, however, stems from a deeper interest in linguistics. The images themselves now take form from the underlying texts in which they are created. Using individual letters smith builds new images in response to that deconstruction, creating a visual journal exploring the idea that words can have many different meanings. A recent process utilizes letters hand drawn onto paper from an automatic writing process. Smith has exhibited works in group shows in Australia, Europe and the UK. http://www.erinsmith.com.au
