Launched in 2003, the Keystone Design Union (KDU) is a creative strategic consultancy fuelled by over 70 members in more than 60 different countries. “The KDU unites the world’s top established and undiscovered creative talent to form teams specifically tailored to deliver innovative, strategic solutions to the world’s top brands,” says founder David Gensler.
SV/K2 saw the KDU collaborating under their own brand name, Serum Versus Venom, with K2 Snowboards. “We worked to create a range of boards, apparel and accessories unlike anything K2 had ever done before,” Gensler explains. “The concept behind the logo was that of collaboration.
We also included the 33º mark, which has different meanings and possible interpretations – but in this instance alludes to the degree before water
turns to ice: the degree of change.”
As with most of their projects, a bespoke typeface was developed for SV/K2. “Creative director Aerosyn Lex leads the charge on much of the custom typography we produce – including that for MTV2, 361 Sport and Trouble & Bass, shown here,” he continues. “A lot of our designs begin as sketches, but are refined by the usual suspects: Illustrator and Photoshop. Ultimately, a logotype is just a succinct piece of communication,” he adds.
