Self initiated art work for my studio
“This world is but a canvas to our imagination” – Henry David Thoreau
Personal artworks created for my new studio setup.
It’s been quite some time since my last personal piece but I have been really busy with client work
I am loving the new direction my Cintiq is taking me! Amazing piece of kit!
Anyway thanks for all the support so far and hope you like my future works!
We just launched a new experience for A Company of Wolves — WeCreateWolves.com
A Co. of WLVS, is an ideal experience of art & design. The artists involved act as a symbol to represent the canis lupus migrations & travels throughout each territory across the globe. A visual field of tracks / wolf-line collectively & individually. We’ve created a dialogue with the historical + mythical battle of the wolf. The fear & pride; the monster in your view-finder, did our imagination create it, questions of if it was/is/continues an illusory matrix & the epic odyssey of our dear protagonist-villain polarity.
This new site was launched to share more of what we have to offer. You should continue to view ofWLVS.co for news updates & corporate/commercial information. Pulling energy with each phase of the moon, a record of pack activities are on the following social sites — ofWLVS.tumblr.com, @ofWLVS, facebook.com/ACompanyOfWolves, be.net/ACompanyOfWolves & pinterest.com/ofWLVS

Text over image // Multi-layered // Mask
Another recent addition whilst working on a couple of mask related images. Was looking at ways to produce a chrome effect to sharpen the surface and give it some depth/dimension. Using a variety of mediums, this exploration is what I would see as part of a sticker set or a board graphic.
Inspired by Ukiyo-e & the transmission of tales.
…Should mock one up!
I recently launched a new site along with a bunch of new work, take a look!
Hello KDU staff and members,
So this is my very first post.
First i would like to thank the KDU Team and David Gensler and David Son for gaving me the opportunity to join this great and creative family.
My name is Daniël Matakupan. I’m a freelance illustrator residing in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands. In the past few years I’ve worked for clients such as TEDx Amsterdam, Sanoma Media, Publish Magazine, Funkrush Clothing and more. And now is a proud member of the KDU.
Hope you like my work!
Rage . Fury . Intense / Mixed Media
Recent new piece that looks great on print, it is has a neat aesthetic to it from every angle.
I started using hand written words at the beginning of the year, so, this is a strong visual reference to most of my work now.
There is a simple system of arrangement and process to get the effect used here, which in terms of an identity development, is a good look.
Whilst colour is always a good challenge, and of course there is a need for it, some newer pieces are simple black & white.
My view is that there is still so much depth to discover between these two tones, yet colour is just as pleasing for colour specific visuals that warrant.
This works well. Oh, colour items on the way too.
InkFace / New Development / Mixed Media :
Here is the latest edition of artwork.
In a nutshell my own development using an array of mixed media, every tool I have is being used fully and cranked hard!
This has been a long time coming, so for me, it is a milestone reached. After a few discussions around the table, plenty of caffeine, days melding into nights and nose to grind. I have been looking through a vast selection of old work that to me, is just that, old. The only way to push past this kind of ‘block’ was to scrap some, keep some, build anew. Still the same one man show, but this time, more determined with a whole trunk of focus.
I am very aware that this point was reached well over a year ago, during this swift development, one of the main factors was by reading my personal journal posts and how slow and frustrating the process has been.
To quote the previous post, production time is now much swifter, paying much close attention to mediums used + file types to ensure size aspect & resolution stays exact.
Fully confident that this will develop much further as my own language as an Artist and Designer.
You can find a page to continually reference all of my old/new personal musings & mess right here
Prima Facie/Facient :
Pen / Scan | Abstract | speed test.
Having never fully exercised working on words, except for writing & a set of png letters for poster plates years ago, thought it may be time to give it more thought.
Executed from ‘one’ file alone. One simple quickly written image to scan + 3 programs using the same file for the entire construction of the image.
Now, the original file was intended for a collab weeks ago, as it never happened, here it is.
The time taken for the two lettering files from scan to finish, the background, including one background element was well under 4 hours.
Well, some may point out that it could be better, sure, or another choice of wording perhaps, the point is, that with combined efforts, time constraints should not be an issue.
Production time is now much swifter. Also paying much more attention to file types used over the past couple of years to ensure size aspect & resolution stays exact.
This is not as comfortable as splashing paint, but holds awesome possibilities alongside older digital languages/work that could have been pitched. Keep everything.
This would look just as good, better in fact, in paint…
‘Bohemian Vintage’ / Art Direction & Photography – session 1
This is a selection of a recent Art Direction & Photography with my good friend & professional model Alice la Vie.
Having a massive interest in photography, and only recently started to pursue a more varied selection and style to my work worthy of serious dedicated art direction. Point & shoot right?
There has been so much amazing feedback to my photography, this together with wanting to steer clear of Architecture as the main field of study, so decided to arrange a couple of photoshoots. The female form is the next logical step from architecture, with a good study of light and shadow, but colour rather than black & white is a huge challenge for me.
Alice is great to work with, we get on very well, she is also an alternative model, more to the point she is highly adaptable at pushing her own creativity, and certainly not a flake like many other ladies that I have come across. She is well aware of her limitations and knows how to push herself to achieve results. On the day we both worked super hard gathering as much variation to our styles as possible, throwing around a good amount of ideas and inspired themes. This selection of clothing ( models own ) gave me a good opportunity to mix up the colour & blend a vintage lighting style into the composition. Here you can also see a good selection of prints chosen from this particular photo session as further aesthetic communication. Rather than just taking random shots, there was some format involved in producing high quality images for a purpose.
On the day we completed 3 strong visual sessions / themes + a hundred or so test shots & deletions.
My conclusion is that the photography part was easy, with a little direction. Now, if you are working as a team, it is essential to communicate, this allows entire creative freedom with super positive results.
Alice la Vie can be found over at her social network page > here
To be continued…

6 months ago I was lucky enough to get to join the crew behind 43 magazine – the only skateboard mag based out of NYC, and a creative and artistic approach to skateboarding through the eyes of some of the worlds best skateboard photographers. Issue 002 has been on the stands long enough now that I can share a preview for those of you who haven’t seen it yet. It’s available in skateshops and independent book stores around the world. Go grab yourself while they’re still out there.
